North Korea: Satellite Imagery Shows Preparations For Long-Range Missile Test

New satellite imagery suggests that Pyongyang may be preparing to fire a long-range ballistic missile from its Dongchang-ri launch site in northwestern North Korea, an unnamed Japanese government source said Jan. 27, Kyodo reported. Pyongyang last engaged in long-range ballistic missile activity in December 2012, with what it called a satellite launch. North Korea also tested what it claims was a submarine-launched ballistic missile in 2015. According to Yonhap, the South Korean Defense Ministry said the North has yet to declare a no-sail zone near the test site — a move typically preceding missile tests. First quietly in the 1980s but lately rather overtly, North Korea has proceeded with its weapons program despite sanctions, isolation, military threats, and attempts at engagement and reconciliation.
