Syria: Loyalist Forces Clash With Rebels Near Jordanian Border
December 30, 2015 | 16:50 GMT |
Syrian government troops backed by Russian airstrikes clashed heavily with rebels near the town of Sheikh Maskin, close to the country's border with Jordan, Reuters reported Dec. 30. Capturing Sheikh Maskin, strategically located on a supply route connecting the capital of Damascus to the city of Daraa near the Jordanian border, is thought to be the main goal of the first major government offensive into the south since Russia began lending air support to government troops. An end to the Syrian conflict is nowhere in sight, and more countries are being drawn into the fray.
