Syria: Russia Proposes March 1 Cease-Fire
Russia has proposed a cease-fire in Syria to begin on March 1, unnamed U.S. officials said Feb. 10, AP reported. According to one official, Washington believes the Russians are giving themselves and the Syrian military three weeks to regain valuable territory — much of it in parts of the north currently held by rebel forces that are largely supported by the United States and Turkey — before the cease-fire is implemented. The U.S. officials said Washington wants an immediate cease-fire and complete humanitarian access to Syrian civilians trapped in the fighting. The United States, Russia, and several other countries are set to meet later this week at an annual security conference in Munich to discuss the Syrian conflict. Satellite imagery obtained by Stratfor confirms that Moscow continues to bring in new Su-35 aircraft and air defense systems to keep other countries from intervening in Syria.
